Shane commenced the sport of Judo at Kugatsu Judo Club in Sydney (Liverpool) as an eight year old in 1973 and has continuously been registered and deeply involved in the sport for the past 40 years as a competitor, club coach, event organizer and sports administrator.

Shane was awarded his Black Belt at 18yrs of age – at the time he was the youngest Black Belt in Australia. Shane was part of the Australian Judo Squad from 1983 until 1994. During this period he was a 10 x medalist in National & Oceania competitions. He also competed in Shoriki Cup, Pacific Rim, University World Championships, and A-League tournaments in Europe during those same years.


In 1994 Shane was elected onto the Judo NSW Board of Management and was a Board member for 12 years in various roles. He was instrumental in securing the permanent Judo NSW Central Dojo located at Sydney Olympic Park.

Shane has played a major role in organising National Titles, Pac-Rim, Oceania, Test Events, Olympic Games, Youth Olympics, National & State University Champs, as well as the NSW International Open and many local NSW tournaments. For the Olympic Games in 2000, Shane was employed by SOCOG as the Judo Information Manager.

In 2001 Shane was elected as a NSW Olympic Council Executive Member, and has organized Olympic activities such as Fundraising Dinners and Awards. Since moving to the Central Coast in 2006 Shane has been doing project work for the Australian Drug Foundation, the University of Newcastle Exercise & Sport Science department and has been elected the inaugural Deputy Chair of the Central Coast Sports Federation.

In 2008 Shane was elected as a Director for the Judo Federation of Australia and has since coordinated Conferences, the implementation of a National Database, the introduction of a National Logo and Branding Policy. Shane consolidated the annual National Championships into a feature event with sponsors, mainstream media coverage and hosted at a major regional stadium, which now receives in excess of 800 entries annually. Shane was recently appointed to the role of National Secretary for the Judo Federation of Australia.

Locally, Shane has co-ordinated the Active After Schools Judo program on the Central Coast & North-West Sydney which has taught almost 1000 children a 7 week program of Judo in the past 18 months. As a former Rugby League player, Shane is currently teaching local junior & senior RL clubs on correct falling and tackling drills to improve safety for players and demonstrate that technique is more effective than strength in controlling your opponents.

From late 2012, Shane has established a recreational based Judo Club with two training locations at Erina & Chittaway Bay, consisting of 12 classes per week and 80 registered members. Shane very much enjoys having a “wrestle” and keeping fit by playing younger local players and assisting them achieve their future goals in the Olympic sport of Judo.

While residing in The Netherlands for 6 months in 2010 Shane was approached by the Dutch Judo Suit supplier Essimo. In 2011 Shane became the distributor for this company in the Oceania region.

From the inception of the Wollongong Nationals in 2011, Shane has initiated the Trade Stall Expo where all Judogi brands available in Australia promote their products to the Australian Judo community. This initiative has involved, Jols, Adidas, Grappling Store Mizuno, Fighting Films, and more recently Elite Merchandise, and has provided Australian Judoka with a wide choice of martial art merchandise to choose from.
