Australian team excels at the Oceania Championships 2016

Australian Judo can hold its head up high after excellent performances by our team at the recent OJU Championships in Canberra.  In the senior divisions the Australian team won 10 of the 13 gold medals on offer.  The great story for Australian judo is that our junior and cadet teams also did very well.

Well done to every member of the team for giving their best when wearing the Green and Gold!  The JFA is proud of both the performance of the team and the high morale and the excellent behaviour of the team. The JFA is very happy with the marked improvements in the performance of the Australian team over the last couple of years.

The JFA also wants to thank head coach Daniel Kelly and the rest of the coaching team including Rob Katz, Joe Costanzo and Ben Donegan.

The team was supported by John Bennett as the team manager who did a fantastic job of organising the team.

After the competition, the JFA with the support of the AIS Combat Centre, organised a training camp with nearly 100 participants.  All of the feedback from the camp was very positive.  We will try to organise more training camps like this with teams from Oceania in the future.

The JFA is very pleased with the results and is looking forward to the Australian team performing well in the future.

The JFA hosted the event in Canberra to help give our athletes a home ground advantage. A tournament like the OJU Championships doesn't happen without a lot of work.  The JFA wants to acknowledge all of the hard work done by Luis Val and the Sports Committee. We could not run events like this without them.

In 2017, the OJU Championships will be held in French Polynesia over the Easter weekend in April with the competition scheduled to start on Good Friday.
