The Sue Williams 'Essence of Judo’ Medals are awarded to the most outstanding male and female senior national team athletes of the past calendar year, recognising outstanding performance and the values of respect and commitment.
Sue Williams OAM, 7th Dan is a Gold Medallist from the 1988 Olympic Games and a 3 x Silver Medallist at World Championships. A pioneer of our sport and undoubtedly recognised as the most highly decorated Australian Judoka internationally.
The naming of the Sue Williams 'Essence of Judo' Medal continues to build upon our recognition of Sue’s extraordinary contribution to our sport and endeavours to inspire our next generation of athletes. When asked about these awards, Sue said “it is very important that we recognise those current elite judoka who are demonstrating both the drive and commitment to excel in international competition and to hopefully inspire them to continue to push the limits of their capability.”
Recipients are selected by a voting process inclusive of all Australian Senior National Team members and the National Coaching Team. These Medals are a distinct and unique recognition within our sport, acknowledging the significant level of outstanding performances reached by our athletes.
